In what is projected to be the most competitive admissions cycle to date, this year’s application season has been looming large and leaving many applicants feeling a bit unhinged.

A flicker of our CBCR torchlight and a nod from the wise owls of admissions to those who have already conquered the October 15th Early Action deadline! You’ve survived the first haunted hurdle of the season, navigated late-night essay revisions, technical submission frights, and the eerie silence that follows after you click submit. Take a moment to celebrate your hard work and resilience before venturing further into the admissions fog.

But beware: November 1st deadlines are now creeping closer, and for many families, the tension is beginning to rise from the shadows. The reality of selectivity can feel chilling, but with the right preparation and a clear plan, there’s no need to fear what lurks around the corner.

As students and parents wrestle with which admissions plan to choose, we’re here to demystify the process, offering more light and less fright as you chart your course through this haunted admissions season.

Early Application Plan Options

  • Early Action (EA)

  • Restrictive or Single-Choice Early Action (REA/SCEA)

  • Early Decision (ED)

  • Early Decision II (ED II)

  • Rolling Admissions

Note: Not all colleges offer every plan. Students will only see the admissions options specific to their chosen schools.

🕷️ Early Decision I & II: The Binding Spell

The number of colleges offering Early Decision has grown in recent years—and not just among the Ivies. Many selective and mid-tier schools now offer ED as a way to identify students who are ready to commit.

Applying ED can be tempting—it delivers a decision earlier (typically by December) and, according to 2025 admissions data, ED acceptance rates often remain two to three times higher than Regular Decision rates when a student’s academic profile is strong.

ED II serves as a second chance for those who were not admitted to their ED I school, had a change of heart, or couldn’t apply earlier.

Beware: ED and ED II are binding—students must enroll if accepted. Families should only cast this spell if they are 100% confident the school is the right academic, social, and financial fit.

💀 Early Action: No Tricks, Just Options

Unlike ED, Early Action (EA) is non-binding. This means students can apply early, receive an early decision, and still keep their options open.

EA is a popular path in 2025, as students seek to get ahead of record-breaking applicant pools while reducing springtime stress. Applying early can demonstrate interest and organization, which are traits admissions officers now value even more as applications surge nationwide.

Beware: The villain here is time management. A rushed or unpolished early app can haunt your chances more than help them.

🕷️ Restrictive or Single-Choice Early Action: Handle with Care

These selective options—offered by just seven of the most elite universities—limit students from applying to multiple early programs at once.

Students can typically still apply EA to public universities, but they must resist the lure of other private EA or ED programs.

The advantage? REA keeps your freedom of choice while giving you a strong early read—plus the opportunity to compare financial aid offers later.

Beware: Read the fine print: each school’s rules vary like mysterious potions.

💀 Rolling Admissions: Treats That Come Early

Rolling plans can be a welcome break from the fright. Schools with rolling admissions review applications as they arrive and release decisions in as little as 2–8 weeks.

Think of it like a pumpkin patch of opportunities: you can collect multiple offers early and use them for leverage when comparing financial aid or merit awards later. Rolling admissions are increasingly popular at large state universities and institutions that aim to guide students swiftly through the haunted halls of the application process.

The advantage is clear: submit your application, and the college responds, often faster than with traditional deadlines giving you more options to choose from before others even see the light of day.

🕷️ 2025 Admissions Trends: What’s Stirring in the Cauldron

  • Record application volume: Students are applying to more schools than ever, increasing competition and waitlist use.

  • Test-optional policies in flux: Some universities (like Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown) are reinstating testing requirements, while others remain optional. Check each college’s current stance.

  • AI essay monitoring: Admissions teams are now using AI-detection tools, so make sure your personal statement sounds authentically you.

  • Increased importance of demonstrated interest: Colleges want to know you’re genuinely excited to attend—open those emails, visit virtually, and engage when you can.

💀 Don’t Let Application Season Haunt You

Research your options, ask questions, and pay close attention to deadlines to avoid the fright. The path may look eerie, but with the right guidance, it doesn’t have to be terrifying.
